Each morning, I arrive at the school around 5:30. I always get to a study room with a window, lay out all my books/pens, open up my computer, and get to work. Also, each morning, right as I'm beginning to get into the groove of things and really digging into lectures, I get a facetime call at 7:00. It's my wife and son. Jackson is ready to pray over his "oatmeal" and we are ready to dive into the scriptures as a family.
For me, the tradition of morning family scripture study began in my early childhood years. My dad would hold family scripture study every morning at 6am. If he was out of town on business he would be sure to call us from his hotel and at least read a verse or two with us and then we would pray as a family. I have distinct memories kneeling around the speaker phone as one of us would, in between yawns, say the morning family prayer. My dad called family scripture study the Teflon of the day; we would become 'non-stick' to the world as we would hold family scripture study and prayer every morning.
It is with pleasure that I continue this tradition with my small family. It is interesting to notice how the Adversary gets into my heart every time I hear my phone ring for scripture study. I am in the middle of studying and don't want to be bothered. It doesn't take long, though, before I feel the sweet feelings in my heart of love for the Lord and for my family as we read together.
I believe there is a power within the scriptures. It protects us from the world and unites us as families. Rachel and I don't read a ton each day; we read a couple of verses, and Jackson repeats a few words we tell him. After we read, we share with one another what we liked from what we read.
It's simple, but I know the simple practice of daily family scripture study will
keep me and my family more free from the world,
and closer to each other and to God.
Start today, enjoy the blessings of family scripture study.
